    Railroad and Transit Team


    Burns provides design and construction solutions to help maintain, improve, and expand the nation’s railroad and transit infrastructure. Burns’ Railroad and Transit team’s offers a full range of engineering design services for station, administrative, maintenance, shop, crew/personnel, substation, and special purpose facilities as well as rail bridges, catenary structures, and associated infrastructure construction. Our strong experience in facility and structures maintenance and management, including historic restoration, allows us to offer our clients customized, cost-effective solutions to help build resilient and sustainable infrastructure.


    Burns is currently seeking a Signals Designer II to join our Philadelphia, PA team.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • With the support and over sight of the senior technical staff duties will include but not be limited to:
      • developing signal and communication designs for railroad and transit clients.
      • perform power calculations for railroad applications
      • becoming well versed in ACSES Positive Train Control operations and design
      • understanding I-ETMS Positive Train Control operations and design
    • Assist the design team in the coordination of project designs with other disciplines.
    • Learn and participate in the execution of specific engineering and design analyses.
    • Learn how to communicate design requirements with contractors and equipment suppliers.
    • Assist activities to ensure that construction, installation, and operational testing conform to functional specifications and customer requirements.
    • Demonstrate aptitude for learning company technical policies and procedures during the execution of projects for clients.
    • Perform work in the timeframe and budget allotted.
    • Perform non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity. Work may involve areas lacking precedent.
    • Perform design calculations, prepares material and equipment specifications and provides preliminary sketches and notes for drawings.
    • Perform system design layout and sizing for assigned projects.
    • Responsible to coordinate the design with other disciplines, attend design coordination meetings with team members and client representatives.
    • Prepares electronically generated drawings with accuracy, neatness and speed, maintaining high quality and uniform standards of lines and lettering.
    • Informs the senior designer and engineer of technical challenges and any design work beyond his or her capabilities.
    • Learns to review communication and signal drawings, record revisions and keeps all disciples informed of details and schedules.
    • Coordinates the contract documents with the construction personnel and participates (under supervision) in site inspections during construction as required.
    • Assists in field data collection and/or field system verifications.
    • Assists in the supervision of drafters assigned to a project.
    • Assists in the review and adjustment to project specifications to fit project requirements.
    • Assists in the studies and selection of equipment to fit the project design.
    • Actively participates in professional organizations where the technical reputation and image of the firm may be enhanced.


     Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in electrical, networking or information technology engineering from a four-year college or university accredited program with zero-two years of related experience training; equivalent combination of education and experience, plus two years practical design experience or five years applicable design experience in the design of similar projects.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation Design software; MicroLok II, Electro-Logix and/or VPI application programming, MS Excel Spreadsheet software and MS Word Processing software.

    • Valid driver's license may be required upon assignment.
